Engine Oil sump screw thread leaking from thread damage caused by over-tightening and the presence of sealant to hide the damage
According to good practice guides, your drain plug should be changed at every oil servicing. It is, however, very common for automotive workshops in Asia to exclude the drain plug. It is also rather common for automotive workshops to also exclude a new oil filter and instead, change only the oil.
We tend to veer on the side of caution and change out a new original drain plug/washer for you during every oil change as well as a brand new original oil filter – All included into the price of the oil change package with nothing more to pay.
This begs the question, how does an old drain plug cause thread damage? Drain plug crush washers get crushed when used; When the same drain plug is used again and again, the washers don’t seal as well – causing a leak. What happens is, economically-concerned mechanics tend to tighten them a lot more so leaks don’t happen – When this happens, the threads on the drain plug begin tearing on the oil sumps’ threads.
Don’t let old drain plugs damage the screw threads in your oil sump. The only good way is to replace the entire sump and some oil sumps can cost up to around $300 to replace.
